Oral administration of Celebrex, an inhibitor of the COX-2 enzyme associated with inflammation, was found to reduce the incidence of skin cancer by about 50% compared to a placebo. Unfortunately, Celebrex is in the same class of drugs as Vioxx, removed from the market after it was found to cause high risks of heart attack and stroke. So taking Celebrex for skin cancer prevention may not make great sense.
The researcher is currently investigating whether it’s possible to develop a topical formulation of the drug that can be applied directly to the skin to achieve a similar protective effect without associated cardiovascular risk. She is also testing vitamin D.

I would expect ibuprofen (Advil) to have a similar effect because it also blocks the COX-2 enzyme, although less selectively than Celebrex or Vioxx. Ibuprofen can be applied topically by puncturing a liquid Advil gel cap and mixing it with skin cream. A single dose of ibuprophen applied topically will stay active for days as opposed to hours for the drug taken orally.

This is interesting information Dan, thank you for posting it!
You mentioned applying ibuprophen topically staying active for days. Does that mean it works topically for pain too? |

| Yes, topical ibuprofen can work for pain without the liver and stomach problems that oral ibuprofen can cause. The write-ups I saw suggest combining it with orange oil or DMSO to increase penetration. Don't apply the liquid ibuprofen directly to the skin without mixing with a skin cream because it is too strong and acidic. |

Thanks Dan! I have some Perrin's Creme Complete Antioxidant Formula that I can use to mix with. It's definitely worth a try for me, I'm in 24/7 misery with this bcc  |

I'm in 24/7 misery with my bcc as it's going through the healing and peeling process. Using the Perrin's Blend For Skin Lesions and Moles opened the bcc up to almost twice the size it was when I started. I know the area around a bcc is usually hiding more cancer cells under the surrounding skin, and PB exposed several spots.
Since then the pain, itching, burning, and stinging has made it difficult to sleep or even think straight at times. I've tried a topical lidocaine mixture based in aloe vera gel, which works for short periods of time, but it dries and builds up a layer that causes bleeding to clean it off. The Perrin's Blend ItchEeze did not help at all, and actually caused severe burning until I finally cleaned it off after waiting an hour for it to help.
After reading about the ibuprofen option Dan posted about I decided to try that for the pain, itching, etc. I mixed a couple of drops of ibuprofen liquid with a small amount of Perrin's Creme Complete Antioxidant Formula, which I had been using to soothe the irritated skin of the bcc and applied it with a q-tip. It burned for about 25 minutes (but it was already quite irritated) and then began to calm down, and by one hour later had stopped all pain and itching.
At the time I didn't realize the ibuprofen could also inhibit the growth of cancer cells, but this morning when I came here to post my results I (searched for) and read all ibuprofen-related posts (didn't realize they were here) so inhibited growth is a huge plus.
