Don't use potting soil mix like I did. Too coarse. Mix 1/3 fine, sifted soil (use a kitchen strainer), 1/3 sand/ 1/3 vermiculite. Fill those little peat pots with the mix. Then put a couple (or a few) seeds each in the peat pots with a tray underneath. Press down lightly with your fingers. (You won't be able to see the seeds once they're on the soil.) Don't press hard. Then very lightly dust the top of the soil with a bit of the soil mix in your bag. Water with a spray mister twice a day if it's hot in your apt. Keep them moist but not boggy at all times. Keep in an eastern window until they germinate, which will be staggered. Amazingly, the seeds know when the other are sprouting...(food for thought). Germination time is about a week for the first ones. When they reach 3 - 4" start watering from below and also keep misting. Plants at that height will suck the water up, but the surface should always be kept moist. You can move them to a western window when they germinate. Pinch off the middle stem: this makes it send out side stems, which you want. Wait this it's about 5-6" high, I think, to do it. At some point you transplant them to pots, not sure exactly when. Good luck!

This advice came from the Australian medicinal herb company, Beautanicals. (Not sure whether the title of my last post came through---doesn't look like it did on my screen. |
