I’m 70 years old with extremely light skin, light teal colored eyes and blond hair. I stopped using Fluorouracil four days ago. My facial regime was twice a day for two weeks; arms three weeks. My skin condition is pre-cancerous, and Fluorouracil was prescribed as a cancer deterrent.
The dermatologist provided very little information regarding this process and I was somewhat alarmed when my skin started to weep and form scabs. Fortunately, I have a close personal friend who is a recently retired dermatologist. He explained the entire process and now I feel much better; I should have discussed all avenues with him before I started.
He stated that the length of time one should apply Fluorouracil depends upon individual skin type and how it responds to the cream. Some individual’s skin starts the erosion process within days, others take much longer. Once the skin becomes very raw or starts to blister, the application of the cream should stop; applying the cream to raw skin or open sores isn’t a good idea.
Although I feel very uncomfortable, the itching and shedding doesn’t affect my sleep or cause pain that I can’t endure. I’m not using any ointments on my skin and just let it be. When showering, I use Bare Essentials face cleanser (powder form) to help remove dead skin etc. However, I must remind myself to keep my hands off my face and leave the scabs intact to avoid any possible scarring. I walk my dog around the neighborhood and plan to go shopping this weekend; I don’t care much what strangers think since I will never see them again, and they probably wouldn’t recognize me if they did. The fact that I must become a hat wearer when going outdoors has me a little galled:(. Nevertheless, my husband, who is a hat wearer, is my best supporter and enjoys helping me search for hats on the internet:)
