I'm new here, I just wanted to let everyone know about a online resource I found which is trying to get 50,000 people into the national bone marrow registry. SheKnows.com is partnering with Save Giovanni's Friends to get 50,000 new people added to the national database. Please just go check out the video and bone marrow page , and even if you don't submit your name for a cheek swab kit, at least pass it on to others. The more we add , the more we save. It was a grassroots effort started by a local Doctor who's wife had leukemia to improve the National Bone Marrow Donor Agency which at that time was very limited in donors.. I met many people in the plight and saw some not make it. I also got to know Anisa Ayalla ( the girls who's parents had a baby to try and "make her a donor") They were blessed with a baby girl that was a perfect match and saved Anisa's life. Amazing stuff. Being typed as a bone marrow donor is as easy as sticking a q tip in your mouth. Where the true guts and generosity begins is if you are lucky enough to be that one in a million match for somebody who has leukemia and your healthy marrow can save their life. Being a bone marrow donor is a serious proposition as they need to put you out and then drill into your hip to harvest the marrow. Our local police chief had the opportunity to be a lifesaver and would do it again in a heartbeat. I was almost chosen and I have to tell you it's a "oh boy what did I get myself into kind of thing" I definitely would have gone through with it to save a life..but I wasn't jumping up and down thrilled about getting drilled on.
