A new mice study summarized at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070429113457.htm
confirms that moderate alcohol consumption significantly increased the tumor size of breast cancer (a 1.96-fold increase in tumor weight vs. control mice). The study also found that moderate alcohol intake caused a 1.28-fold increase in tumor blood vessel density vs. the control group, and that a hormone called VEGF associated with tumor blood vessel growth was increased in the alcohol group. The alcohol consumption did not cause significant changes in the body weight of the mice.
Even moderate (equivalent of 2 drinks a day) alcohol consumption appears to promote cancer growth.
