As part of "Operation False Cure" the FTC has issued an administrative complaint against Bioque Technologies, Inc. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/09/boguscures.shtm
The respondents marketed an extract from the soursop or guanabana tropical fruit tree and claimed in their advertisements that it could prevent and treat melanoma. They also represented that the product, called Serum GV, was clinically proven to do these things. Under the proposed agreement, the respondents are required to pay the full amount of Serum GV sales, $9,035.85, in consumer redress.
Here is the advertisement I saw at http://www.healthproductsusa.net/15_bioque_serum_gv_health.htm
Bioque Serum GV
Only Effective Topical Treatment for Skin Cancer!
Bioque Serum GV is physician recognized as the only available and effective topical treatment for skin cancer. Bioque Serum GV utilizes a botanical extract that is 10,000 times more effective than the leading chemotherapy drugs. A remarkable new product for spot application to problem areas of the skin to prevent the formation of melanoma (skin cancer). In the cases where cancer has already appeared in skin tissue, Bioque Serum GV boosts the body's own protective mechanism so that they can destroy those cancer cells before they can spread to the internal organs of your body. There are many forms of skin cancer. Melanoma, or "black mole cancer," is the name given to the most dangerous form of skin cancer. The reason melanoma is so dangerous is that once it grows to a certain thickness, it metastasizes or spreads throughout the body. After melanoma has spread to the internal organs, there is little that can be done and death follows shortly thereafter. This type of cancer tends to occur in men and women in the prime of their lives. There has been an alarming increase in the number of new cases ofBioque Serum GV melanoma each year. Melanoma is increasing at a faster rate than any other cancer. This may be a result of the depletion of the ozone layer. This is why Bioque scientists have focused efforts on finding a way of preventing and even reversing this most unforgiving and rapidly spreading form of cancer. Bioque Serum GV is a non-prescription, non-surgical skin cancer treatment consistently recommended by leading dermatologists and cancer specialists. Bioque Serum GV is also the personal choice of many of these experts for application to their own bodies and those of their families.*

Well, the advertisement is clearly over the top in BS, but the product is interesting and has potential as a topical treatment for skin cancers. Annona Muricata extract is better known as graviola or paw paw. Graviola is said to kill cancer cells, slow tumor growth, kill bacteria, kill viruses, kill parasites, reduce blood pressure, expel worms, lower heart rate, stimulate digestion, and dilate blood vessels. http://www.detailshere.com/graviola.htm
Pyruvic acid is a breakdown product of glucose in digestion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyruvate However, it has also been studied for its ability to promote new blood vessels aiding tumor growth and metastasis (a bad thing). Pyruvic acid is believed to be broken down by cancer cells into lactic acid. http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/61/8/3290
But wait, just when things were looking bad for pyruvic acid as a cancer treatment, there is evidence that it could work. A trick called RNA interference to modify glycolysis in tumors stops the conversion of pyruvate into lactic acid, causing it to build up. Overwhelmed with pyruvate, the defective mitochondria in the cancer cell is forced to respond, leading to apoptosis (cell death) and declines in tumor growth rates. Perhaps graviola interacts with pyruvic acid in this way, or simply applying pyruvate topically produces the overwhelming effect. http://www.emphycorp.com/cancerprevention.html |
