Here is an abstract from a British paper mentioning that quercetin may be an effective candidate for topical consideration for skin cancer treatment.

Induction of cancer-specific cytotoxicity towards human prostate and skin cells using quercetin and ultrasound

S Paliwal1, J Sundaram1 and S Mitragotri1

1Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-5080, USA

Bioflavonoids, such as quercetin, have recently emerged as a new class of chemotherapeutic drugs for the treatment of various cancer types, but are marred by their low potency and poor selectivity. We report that a short application of low-frequency ultrasound selectively sensitises prostate and skin cancer cells against quercetin. Pretreatment of cells with ultrasound (20 kHz, 2 W cm-2, 60 s) selectively induced cytotoxicity in skin and prostate cancer cells, while having minimal effect on corresponding normal cell lines. About 90% of the viable skin cancer cell population was lost within 48 h after ultrasound-quercetin (50 M) treatment. Ultrasound reduced the LC50 of quercetin for skin cancer cells by almost 80-fold, while showing no effect on LC50 for nonmalignant skin cells."

While they mention the use of ultrasound to increase absorption, I am thinking DMSO could also be employed to carry quercetin topically. Quercetin has a molecular weight of about 332 g/mol. DMSO has limited ability to transport molecules below about 1000 g/mol.

Thanks, Rocco, the idea of using ultrasound is very attractive for any topical skin cancer treatment in place of solvents such as DMSO. I was surprised to find home ultrasonic devices for physical therapy/ massage available from about $60 on eBay and other sites such as http://www.lebelleonline.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LBI&Product_Code=PUL28&Category_Code=ULT
(The link is for info only, I have no relationship whatsoever with this company.) I understand the cheap home units can be very effective.

Quercetin is a bright yellow substance found in yellow onions and apples, and is available as a dietary supplement. Quercetin may turn the skin yellow for a while following application.

In the text underneath you will find a new flavonoid cancer treatment protocol. This protocol explains how to use flavonoids (that are extracted from plants and have proven anti-cancer abilities) for cancer treatment. It costs only approximately 20 dollars or between 0.5 and 1 dollar a day. It uses flavonoids, that are abundant in diet and have a variety of health promoting effects, such as antioxidant and cytoprotective (cell protective) effects. Please bookmark this page or print it. www.treat-cancer.nl .

Flavonoid cancer treatment protocol

You need to follow the entire protocol.

1 Dissolve 500 mg Vitamin C in 0.5L of water in a bottle.
2 Open up one capsule containing pure quercetin (500 mg) and sprinkle the entire content in this water. Shake well.
3 You can now drink the content, but you don't need to drink the entire bottle at once.

=======================

Repeat step 1-3 as much as you like (while monitoring for side effects), but wait a few hours for each repetition.
Optionally, you can later use a higher dosage Vitamin C and Quercetin (such as 1000 mg Quercetin and 1000 mg Vitamin C), very high dosage (such as 2000 mg Quercetin and 2000 mg Vitamin C) or extreme high dosage (such as 3000 mg Quercetin and 3000 mg Vitamin C).

Extra remarks:

Quercetin is present in fruits and vegetables such as apples, oranges, berries, tea leaves and unions and is generally considered as safe.
Be informed that there is no guarantee that this flavonoid cancer treatment protocol will work.
This protocol is updated sometimes, please visit this site once in a while. www.treat-cancer.nl

Dosage strength is usually 500 mg (using another dosage is fine, but you need a different amount of capsules).

Quercetin is avalible in heath food stores or the internet...

Vitamin C is sold in supermarkets and drug stores. Be sure you don't buy a timed release tablet, or it will not dissolve in water very well.

Hi there, I recently was sent a link to the page describing the anti-cancer treatment from quercetin and Vit. C from a member of the Young Survivors Coalition which an online support group for people being treated for breast cancer under the age of 40. I did some extensive searching and ended up here at a skin cancer group after doing a PubMed search and google search. From what I have read there is a concern with quercetin being a phyto-estrogen that can actually increase cell proliferation for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer. At the same time many of the articles made a distinction between a beta estrogen receptor and an alpha estrogen receptor. Some cancer cell lines showed cell death while others showed a 1.7 fold increase in cell proliferation. These studies did not combine Vitamin C with quercetin though. Part of my worry here is that some of the ER + breast cancer patients on the website may try this without understanding the risks involved. I am curious if there is any medical or scientific references where this combination is studied with breast cancer that is ER+. If anyone can present the references it would be a great help in folks on this website making informed decisions.

Thanks for your time.
