I am a breast cancer survivor and have been told of the basal cell about two weeks ago and I have my Mohs surgery set for in the morning 1/9. It is a spot on my face just under me nose on the right side. Needless to say with a mastectomy, reconstruction and many chemo treatments I have had a lot of medical stuff done. I handle things ok. If I know what to expect. The nurse called to tell me the biopsy was BCC and the date and time for the Mohs. Not a lot of details. I was wondering if anyone would share what goes on as far as the surgery. I want to know the simply things like Will I be able to have my husband with me the whole time? Will I be sitting up or lying down. Will I have an IV? Will they give me any meds to calm me?? What do I need to expect as far and pain during? Thank you for reading I hope someone has time to put my mind a little more at peace. K Root 66 USA 1 Posts Posted - 02/08/2013 :  11:20:41     Hi krobin, I had Mohs surgery on my back (large bcc) in Sept '12. and another Mohs surgery on my face (also bcc) 5 weeks later. I know the anxiety of the unknown before surgery! In answer to your questions: 1) They do not like other people in the room. However I was able to convince them that my husband needed to be with me when I had my back done. They would not let him be there when I had my face done. 2) For my face I was in a chair/bed in a mostly reclined position. 3) I did not have an IV. 4) They can give you something to calm you if you need it. I did not, it wasn't that bad really. 5)There was no pain for me. I had my surgeries done at UC Davis, the nurses and doctors made me feel at ease. They will numb the area and wait. When you are numb, they will cut out the bcc and a small area of what they think is healthy tissue. At that time you will go to the waiting room while they freeze the specimen and check the edges for cancer. This takes at least an hour. If they see some they will take more off. If they got it all they will close the wound (stitches) and put a pressure bandage on. The pressure bandage stays on for 24 hours. The bcc on my face was just above my left eye brow in the middle of my forehead. About the size of a pencil eraser. The scar is 1 inch long. Hope your surgery goes well.
