I have been taking very high doses of supplements including 150mg of pycogenol 2 x d and keep my vitamin D3 levels above 70. I can be in the sun for longer periods now without burning and I suspect these supplements have everything to do with it.

I ended up spending a full day in the sun at high altitude recently (a dumb thing to do) and I did burn some then but no blisters and no herpes outbreak on my lip as it usually causes. There was relatively little pain as compared to previous exposures. My nose did peel a little.

Hi Arrow, thanks for the observation about pycnogenol and sun sensitivity. It's great that you get tested for D3 level. 70 seems like a good target. The vitamin d council says 25(OH)D levels should be between 50–80 ng/ml (125–200 nmol/L), year-round. http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/health/deficiency/am-i-vitamin-d-deficient.shtml How much D3 do you supplement to keep the level above 70?

Pycnogenol is a natural extract from the bark of pine trees that grow in the Landes Forest of southwestern France. Pycnogenol is rich in proanthocyanidins, a special class or water-soluble antioxidant bioflavonoids which are highly bioavailable. I take a similar amount (150mg twice a day) of grape seed extract, mostly to help with blood pressure, that also has proanthocyanidins. It is a little less expensive than pycnogenol (but maybe you get what you pay for). I have noticed that I am less sun sensitive than in years past. Another supplement I take that helps with sun sensitivity is astaxanthin.
