Here are a couple of charts using data at http://www.grassrootshealth.net/ that can provide some insight about how much vitamin D to supplement in the absence of natural sun exposure. The first chart shows the observed vitamin D serum levels in the blood resulting from vitamin D supplementation. The red line shows the median (half of samples above and half below) level and the black lines show the ranges for 1014 people.





At a supplementation of 3000 IU/day, a person is most likely to be at about 50 ng/ml but could be as low as 18 or as high as 94. I have been taking 3000 IU Vitamin D per day so I feel a bit more comfortable after seeing these charts. Vitamins D and K both affect calcium metabolism, and I also supplement vitamin K2.

The second chart shows the percentage decrease in disease incidence compared to a vitamin D serum reference level of 25 ng/ml. Higher vitamin D serum levels have a strong preventative relationship to many cancers.





Sunscreen use is promoted to prevent skin cancer but it also prevents vitamin D synthesis from sunlight. This tactic to prevent skin cancers may lead to other serious diseases. The link to type 1 diabetes is new to me, as that indicates vitamin D is related to pancreas health. A healthy pancreas produces not only insulin but pancreatic enzymes that fight cancers.
