The 2004 Rotterdam Heart Study http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/full/134/11/3100#FN1 made the incredible finding that there is up to 60% less heart attack risk in people who consume the most vitamin K2 from diet, whereas Vitamin K1 levels had no effect. Natural Vitamin K exists in two fat soluable forms: phylloquinone K1 and menaquinone K2. Only about 10% of dietary vitamin K intake is in the K2 form, the other 90% being the more common K1. Vitamin K2 inhibits calcifications in the arteries and soft tissues while enhancing bone strength.

There is plenty of evidence to consider vitamin K2 supplementation for cardiovascular, bone, and arthritis benefits. Lately, there have been promising studies on vitamin K2 and cancer, including a documented human cancer cure using K2 and ACE inhibitors for hypertension (high blood pressure). www.wjgnet.com/1007-9327/13/3259.pdf

I decided to give vitamin K2 (Vitamin Shoppe (MK7, 100 ug) a try for the past week, while also taking prescription ACE inhibitor Lisinopril and ACE receptor blocker Diovan for hypertension. I don't have any glaring skin cancers at this moment but do have some potential trouble spots that I keep an eye on. So far so good.

gloe, thanks for the post! I have not updated this page in a while but I have also been taking both forms of K2 (Life Extension brand) for a couple of years now. http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item01724/Super-K-with-Advanced-K2-Complex.html I am also up to 4000IU a day of vitamin D. Mercola says don't take high amounts of vitamin D without also taking vitamin K. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/12/16/vitamin-k2.aspx

(The article didn't say how high the dose was.) Also, the MK-7 variety of vitamin K2 has a half-life in the body of three days, whereas the cheaper MK-4 has a half-life of only half an hour! So it's well and truly worth paying a bit more for the MK-7

Well, maybe not. Some say that the MK7 form hangs around longer because the body has a hard time using it, while the MK4 is rapidly and thus easily used by the body.

I take both forms. My brilliant alternative doctor also agrees that it is unclear as yet which form is better, so he takes both as well.

Natto is the best source of K2 and available at most Japanese restaurants. Quite nice actually!

It has now been about 4 weeks of taking vitamin K2 and I'm pretty much blown away by my skin's response to it. Usually when I try a new supplement, I have high initial hopes that gradually fade to "Is that really doing anything"? Vitamin K2 has made a positive difference that started within the first week and has continued. Lesions (in my case not very serious ones) develop a crust that flakes off, then a new crust forms, and it flakes off, and so on. It has engaged every problem area I was aware existed, and a couple of other surprise ones (don't overreact if it looks like things are getting worse initially). It was exciting check the mirror each day because the changes happened on a daily basis.

I don't know how much influence the ACE inhibitors have on this healing. There are natural alternatives to prescription ACE inhibitors including hawthorne berries and Anti ACE fish peptides. See for instance http://www.vitacost.com/productResults.aspx?ss=1&Ntk=products&x=9&y=6&Ntt=hawthorne and http://www.iherb.com/PeptACE-Anti-Ace-Fish-Peptides-500-mg-90-Capsules/2639?at=0

Vitamin K2 appears to be my long lost missing nutrient! Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) supposedly is a natural product of bacteria that reside in the lower intestinal tract. Maybe I don't have the right bacteria there to make K2 from K1. Also, a diet full of fish oil, garlic, onions, and fish, that is good for cardiovascular and cancer health can deplete vitamin K, as can too much vitamin D. I'm still learning...
