Posted - 04/05/2007 : 00:28:42 In a Nov 2006 paper in the International Journal of Cancer http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/113489364/ABSTRACT?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0 use of sunbeds was associated with a 15% increase in melanoma although there was no consistent evidence of a dose-response relationship. Exposure to tanning beds before 35 years of age significantly increased the risk of melanoma by 75%. Squamous cell carcinoma but not basal cell carcinoma showed an association with tanning bed use.
The authors state the evidence does not support a protective effect of the use of sunbeds against damage to the skin from subsequent sun exposure. The authors also state that young adults should be discouraged from using indoor tanning equipment and restricted access to sunbeds by minors should be strongly considered.
Although important, putting all the blame for skin cancer on ultraviolet light exposure is a mistake. I feel that skin cancer normally arises from a combination of a cell damaging event and a cancer promoting diet. Please see http://www.topicalinfo.org/Skincancer.htm for more details. |
