Topical sunscreens can be inconvenient to apply to all exposed skin and there are also the issues of toxicity and vitamin D synthesis inhibition. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a sunscreen in a pill?

Polypodium leucotomos is a Central American fern plant that confers remarkable protection (~SPF7) against sunburn and solar ray skin cell damage when taken orally. Polypodium leucotomos has been used for centuries in native cultures to treat tumors, skin diseases (including psoriasis), and sunburn. Modern dermatological researchers discovered that doses of 500–750 mg/day taken orally protect human skin from sunburn, cell death, DNA damage, and oxidant activity from both natural and artificial ultraviolet light. Polypodium leucotomos supplements may afford long-term protection from ultraviolet light-related skin aging and even from cellular changes that can lead to skin cancers.

I just looked at the fernblock site, but I did not see a tincture, Marsha. Am I missing something? So who has tried fernblock?

There was a sunscreen pill in Kenya, which I used when I lived there from 1967-1991. It was called Silvasun, and was composed mainly of vitamin A. I think it was made in the U.K. I have never been able to find it here or on the internet. I have lived here in N.C. since 1991 and now have been diagnosed with my first bcc on my face. Do not want to have surgery, so am searching for an alternative.

Hi marsha, this recent article on a drug called Enbrel for Alzheimers looks interesting for your mom. http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2008/aug2008_Novel-Drug-Therapy-Immediately-Reverses-Alzheimers-Cognitive-Deficits_01.htm

I've been taking the tincture for 4 days. I also got my mother a bottle for dementia. You have to take 60 drops 3 times a day, so a bottle is not going to last very long. My herbalist friend says I can make it myself if I can by it in bulk. I don’t know if its working since I tend to stay out of the sun. I think my age spots might be a little lighter, maybe. I rubbed some on my lips and a spot that I haven’t treated yet, I did that for 3 days, didn't see any difference. My mother called me and said could I help her move that oh never mind I wanted to see if I could call you. So its not an instantaneous cure for dementia.
