I recently went to the podiatrist and it turns out I have a huge plantar wart on the bottom of my foot. The pain is unbearable. The podiatrist gave me a prescription of Carac for 2 weeks. I'm using the topical cream, but I'm super concerned because this is a chemotherapy drug. Is a wart so drastic that I need a chemotherapy drug? Anyhow, I;m super naive and concerned...I'm sorry this sounds stupid, but can I lose my hair?? What side effects can I expect? After the 2 weeks I have to have the root of the wart surgically removed....how exciting. I would really appreciate any feedback as I'm super new to this.

Thanks

Mariela, I was surprised to learn that 5-fluorouracil (Efudex, Carac Cream) is a treatment for plantar warts, but it sounds like your doctor is on target. http://www.podiatrytoday.com/article/2598 has a good discussion of alternative treatments for warts that includes the skin cancer topical treatments 5-fluorouracil and Aldara. Plantar warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and Carac works by interrupting DNA synthesis. I wouldn't worry too much about the stigma of using a "cancer drug" on your wart as the action of Carac should be local and selective to the wart. I'm also sure you will have very little potential for losing your hair.

Warts proliferate in part because the immune system does not recognize the presence of the HPV infection. I have heard of a person successfully cutting deeply into the wart to expose the virus to blood. Then it is recognized by the immune system as a virus infection and antibodies are created to kill it and any other same type HPV and their associated warts.

Anyway, thanks for the post. I hope your wart goes away quickly.
