ALA-PDT Photodynamic Therapy for skin precancer and skin rejuvenation - Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with topical amino levulanic acid (ALA) is a newer approach for treating sun damaged skin. ALA is a natural by-product of red blood cell metabolism. Normal cells are able to clear ALA and have minimal reaction whe exposed to certain types of light energy. Abnormal (sundamaged) cells are unable to metabolize ALA and become selectively eliminated with light exposure. ALA can be activated either by a 'blue light" that reduces the number of precancerous actinic keratoses of the skin or by intense pulse light (IPL) which also results in photorejuvenation of the skin. Hawaii Skin Cancer and Photodamage Center has been a leader in using ALA to treat sundamaged skin, including precancers and certain types of skin cancer.
