I did generic Efudex on my lower lip for two weeks and now six days post and terrible still-cracking, bleeding, pain, lip sticks to all. I have to use a straw to drink anything. I can't open mouth to eat a sandwich, can't floss, hard to brush teeth. My dermatologist never told me what to expect except "discomfort". I was shocked at how bad this is. SHe said to use the cortisone ointment I had at home. The 0.5% did not work. Her associate went to a stronger one. Still no relief. The swelling and rawness is inside my mouth also. I use Aquaphor or Vaseline every 15-20 minutes as lips get dry and stick together. That is an affect of the cortisone. She prescribed a herpes med. I finally took it. No relief. Magic Mouthwash NADA. It is six days post Efudex.

I wish I had done another round of the freezing. It had worked on one corner of my lower lip. I am concerned. Anyone had Efudex on their lip? How long is the healing process before the rawness goes away and new skin stays?

I was just prescribed Efudex 1x a week (on Friday nights) for 6 months. My derm said she would call me in 3 months to see how it is going. If lips are not smoother, etc., then will use 2x a week (Friday evening and Saturday morning). I used Carac cream last year for 1 month with absolutely NO side effects. My new derm said it was possibly a bad batch of cream, or my body doesn't react that way. She also said Carac was more gentle than the Efudex. She said she has done this 1x a week treatment on people who are more in the public's eye, with good results, but that I would be the first she's tried this type of treatment with for the lips. She said the lips are more sensitive than skin so she thinks this will work. I work at a huge law office and was definitely concerned with how I my lips would appear. If I didn't work, I would have just done the regular treatment of everyday. Has anyone had success with this 1x a week thing? I'm 34, have had these dry peely/scaly lips for years. 2 years ago I had a basal cell removed from the bow of my lip.

I am suppose to start the fluorouracil 5% cream on my upper and lower lips next week. I am scared to start as I see from posts how painful it is. Is there anything at all I can buy in advance so Im ready for the pain?
